OpenELEC is one of the best known distributions for the Raspberry Pi. This distro was born as an alternative to Raspbmc that allows us to enjoy Kodi on our mini-computer without having to do anything else. The main drawback of this distribution is that its maintenance leaves a lot to be desired, so it is quite poor in this regard, and it has known vulnerabilities that, if we use it over the Internet, can pose a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
OpenELEC applies the JeOS principle. It is designed to consume relatively few resources and to boot quickly from Flash memory. On May 5, 2014 the OpenELEC team released version 4.0 which included an update to XBMC 13.0 as well as version 3.14 of the Linux kernel and updated device drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
OpenELEC provides a complete set of multimedia center software applications incorporating a preconfigured version of XBMC and third-party add-ons with retro-style game console emulators and DVR plug-ins. OpenELEC is an extremely light and very fast boot Linux distribution designed mainly to boot from Flash memory cards, such as CompactFlash or from SSD; in the same way as the XBMCbuntu distribution (formerly known as XBMC Live) but especially oriented to set top box devices with minimum hardware specifications based on ARM SoCs or on Intel x86 graphics and processors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unfortunately, this OpenELEC project has stopped developing since June 2017. Since in March 2016 OpenELEC was forked after “creative differences”, which led most of its active developers at that time to join the new LibreELEC project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
