A group of attackers calling themselves RansomExx claim to have hacked Gigabyte, a well-known manufacturer of components such as base packets, graphics, PCs and other hardware-related elements. To do this, they would have used a ransomware with which they gained access to more than 100 GB of confidential information. Among that data, a total of 112 GB, would be different confidential documents related to Intel and AMD specifications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let’s not forget that Gigabyte is one of the leading motherboard manufacturers and it is not uncommon for them to have access to information under NDA about upcoming releases and specific processor specifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2020, RansomExx affected the Supreme Court of Justice of Brazil and also the Department of Transportation of Texas, in the United States. So far in 2021 RansomExx attacked companies in Latin America and also made headlines for a major attack that affected the website of the Lazio region, in Italy, where people register to receive the COVID-vaccine. 19. Interestingly, the site used by the RansomExx group does not have Gigabyte’s publication at this time, although it does from other victims. We do not know if this is because they reached an agreement with the attackers and that is why they removed the entry from the site or if there is another reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to The Record, Gigabyte itself confirmed the attack on its Taiwan website, although parts of its portal are currently disabled. In principle, the attack would not have affected the company’s manufacturing or product line, so we can rest assured but this shows that one should never trust that it is 100% safe against cybercriminals and one must be careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
