Edge Computing is one of the technologies that will define and revolutionize the way humans and devices connect to the internet. It will affect industries and sectors such as the connected car, video games, artificial intelligence or machine learning. It will make other technologies such as the cloud or the internet of things even better than they are now.

The cloud is so present in our lives that it is most likely that you use it without realizing it. Every time you upload a file to a service like Dropbox, that you consult your account in the bank’s application, every time you access your email or even every time you use your favorite social network, you are using the cloud. Simplifying it a lot, we can say that using the cloud consists of interacting with data that is on a remote server and which we access thanks to the internet.

A real example of edge computing can be seen in the use of virtual and augmented reality. In general, virtual and augmented reality is affected by insufficient bandwidth and high latency. Those who use these technologies have frequent problems with slow speeds or computing power, which interrupts the ability to achieve an immersive experience. To avoid these problems, edge computing allows parts of the process that consume a lot of computing resources to be downloaded to the cloud.

Other benefits of edge computing include the ability to aggregate and analyze massive data on-site, allowing decisions to be made in near real time. Edge computing further reduces the risk of exposing sensitive data by keeping all that computing power in close proximity. This allows companies to better control the proliferation of information, such as industry trade secrets, or to comply with regulatory policies.

Cloud computing has focused on centralizing services in a group of large data centers. This process allowed resources to be expanded and shared more efficiently, without losing control or business security, which is very important today with the increase in risks in the network.
