Given that the challenges in terms of security and protection have increased due to the adoption of teleworking during the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies dedicated to cybersecurity estimate the increase in cyberattacks in 2021 and it will be seen in an aggressive way cybercrime activity.

With ransomware as the main threat, attacks by cybercriminals will focus on data leakage, overtaking encryption as the preferred tactic. Ransomware is expected to seek new victims and be more automated, and the frequency of attacks against telecommuters will increase.

What to expect for this year and why the increase in cyberattacks

Drastic changes to the way we work in 2020, and the transition to telecommuting will continue to create challenges, as noted by Julia Voo: Covid-19 has weakened organizational security. Remote access inefficiencies, virtual private network vulnerabilities, and a shortage of staff who can help companies adapt make data less secure. From a cybercriminal’s perspective, the attack area is expanding, creating more opportunities, as explained by Joanna Burkey: We will see hackers identifying and exploiting any of the previously created security holes in processes that still exist.

Traditional antimalware solutions cannot block new malware. This is because they do not adapt to the increasing level of sophistication and the frequency of new threats. Attackers will continue to use automation, so the number of malware samples will continue to increase. Businesses must find new protection methods that are agile and designed to stay ahead of new threats. Standalone security and backup solutions are no longer enough.

On the other hand, for users it represents the same risk since new threats that we do not know may come to light and the best we can do is always be aware of what happens on the web and be prepared first of all, remember that you have little, always look for new ways to strengthen your cybersecurity.
