Puppy Linux It is a minimalist and portable GNU Linux distribution, developed by Barry Kauler. Its installation and use format is a self-executing CD that uses a window manager and enough programs to function, and perform most tasks. Thanks to that we can connect to the Internet, use word processor spreadsheets, image, sound, video editors and much more. All this in an ISO that occupies only between 200 and 230 MB.
Its operation is thanks to the fact that the entire system, including the programs, are executed in the computer’s RAM memory, yes, although it can work with less, the recommended is 256 MB.
Although it is portable, a hard drive or USB can also be permanently installed. Changes made to the system are saved in files with the extension 2fs, 3fs or 4fs, on a partition selected by the user.
It is free software, since it uses a GNU GPL license.
This system can be used for many things for example:
▸To recover data from computers that have lost the operating system.
▸To recycle old computers: given the scarcity of media that is common in any environment, whether educational or productive, and thanks to Puppy Linux we can continue to use computers with few resources, for example with 128 MB of RAM.
▸To carry out Systems practices in Computer Science subjects in Institutes and Vocational Training centers.
▸To quickly back up partitions or disks.
This system has a large list of available programs, from a file browser, an Internet browser such as Firefox, GNOME Player or pMusic for audio or video, an email client, compressed file manager, chat or IRC programs such as HexChat, office suites Available with LibreOffice, or text editors such as AbiWord or LeafPad, regarding spreadsheets we can use Gnumeric, or Homebank for managing our domestic economy, if we are developers we also have Geany available.
