Frauds on the Internet are present everywhere. We can be victims of scams that put our security and privacy at risk in different ways. We can receive an e-mail, for example, which is actually a Phishing attack. Also simply with an SMS they could steal our data and passwords if we make a mistake and be victims of these SMS frauds.

Through text messages on the mobile we can be victims of many attacks. Keep in mind that a few years ago it was possibly the most widely used communication medium in many cases. A way to send a short text to someone immediately. But nowadays it is very little used by users and we really only receive SMS with verification codes, advertising and attempted attacks.

One of the most common frauds is a notice that indicates to the owner of the mobile that receives the SMS has won a prize of many thousands of dollars, pesos, euros, etc., as well as a prize in high-end mobile devices with the excuse of “for being clients of our cellular company”.

How are those, and how to protect us from these SMS frauds

To obtain the reward, people must contact the example number: 555555555 and provide folio 777777. When calling, the fraudsters ask for the victims’ credit or debit card details, arguing that they will receive the economic prize.

Those who operate these fraud known as smishing are people, mostly of Central American origin; Authorities have managed to verify that some are from Nicaragua, the country from where this type of fraud is carried out.

To protect ourselves from these types of attacks we can take measures such as:

▸In case you have the suspicion that it is real, you can search the Internet to find out if there are similar reports of fraud.

▸You should always be wary of unknown senders and messages that offer rewards, do not trust on these messages!!

▸Check the url that appears in the message, as it must match the domain of the aforementioned company.

▸If you can contact the company of the supposed sender, be it a phone company or a bank.
