In June 2020, some of us may remember the case that Blizzard suffered since its servers were victims of DDoS attacks, which caused different problems that affected the gaming experience in some of its titles.

Distributed network attacks are often known as distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. This type of attack takes advantage of the specific capacity limits that apply to any network resource, such as the infrastructure that enables the company website. The DDoS attack sends multiple requests to the attacked web resource, with the intention of overwhelming the website’s ability to handle multiple requests and preventing the website from functioning properly.

When the number of requests exceeds the capacity limits of any of the infrastructure components, the level of service is likely to be affected in one of the following ways:

▸The response to requests will be much slower than normal.

▸Some (or all) of user requests may be ignored.

Now and unfortunately for players this happened again on June 1 when moments after the official opening of the Dark Portal and the start of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Classic, Blizzard announced that it was experiencing a DDoS attack that could cause high latency and disconnections for players.

Players on the game’s subreddit are reporting that the heavily populated Faerlina server, where many of the game’s biggest streamers play, appears to be taking the brunt of the attack.

The attack comes just as Blizzard kicked off the Burning Crusade Classic launch, when server stability was already a concern due to the sheer number of players crowding into a few areas of the game world at once. To combat this, Blizzard employs the use of “layers”, which divert groups of players to separate instances of the same server, allowing for greater stability and overall a more enjoyable experience than thousands of players on a single server would allow. single place.
