MX Linux is a lightweight Linux operating system based on Debian Stable, with the core components of antiX, with additional software created and packaged by MX Community. It is developed as a cooperative company between the antiX communities and the old MEPIS, with the aim of using the best tools and talents of each of these distributions.

The stated goal of the community is “to combine an elegant and efficient desktop with a simple configuration, high stability, solid performance and medium size”. MX Linux uses the XFCE desktop environment while KDE and other environments can be added or made available as “derived” ISO images.

MX Linux although it offers the possibility to access Debian Testing packages and Backports, as well as includes integration with Flatpak; and uses a pretty tuned Xfce desktop environment. Where is the secret of your success? There will be opinions for all tastes, so it is difficult to say for sure. Personally (I have installed it on an old laptop since the end of March) neither the presentation nor the aesthetics seem to me at the level of a Xubuntu, Linux Mint or Manjaro with Xfce.

MX Linux Features

It has a basic tools like an installer that handles UEFI computers, a GUI-based method to change the Linux Kernel, and basic antiX programs. But MX stands out from other distributions by having a set of user oriented tools called MX Tools. Many of these tools were developed specifically for MX, while some were derived from existing antiX applications or are existing antiX applications; one pair was imported with permission from outside sources.

Through MX Welcome the user can access the documentation and the main tools of the distro, to be highlighted:

▸Installation of restricted multimedia codecs.

▸Popular applications with MX’s own manager, which is the one that provides support for installing packages from the stable repository, the test repository, the backports and Flatpak.
