While Kodi is just a multimedia center, OSMC is a complete operating system which includes and runs Kodi and allows us to use this multimedia center easily and without configuration on our device.

This operating system seeks to offer users a new concept in terms of multimedia centers, seeking to run Kodi in the foreground in an interface specially designed for televisions, showing that this is the only function of the system, although in reality, if we need it , we can get out of the media center and take control of the operating system (Debian).

The main features of OSMC are:

A simple multimedia center that is very simple and fast to use.

Free and open source, since both Debian (base operating system) and the entire OSMC platform are free.

It has an extension store from where users can download add-ons.

It supports practically all formats, all codecs and all playback protocols over the network.

It has been developed primarily to run on mini-computers. OSMC is a Linux distribution based on Debian whose main application is Kodi, allowing you to have this multimedia center installed on all types of devices. OSMC is an operating system that can make use of the more than 40,000 packages available through the Debian repositories, as well as an App Store.

With OSMC we have everything that Linux offers us (ssh, sudo apt-get, etc) and its specialization to perfectly support Kodi.

If we are interested in testing this new multimedia center we can do it from its main website. For now, OSMC only allows us to control it directly from the Raspberry Pi or equivalent mini-computer, however, the developers have confirmed that they are working on a web interface so that we can also control it through a browser and even with a desktop app.
