Mageia is the name of a free and open source Linux distribution that was born as a fork of Mandriva Linux. The first version of Mageia was published in June 2011.

The Mageia organization manages and coordinates the distribution: code, software hosting, distribution, packaging system, promotion, communication and events. The data, actions, launch schedules, designs, etc., are shared and discussed through this organization.

The objectives of this would be:

Make Linux and free and open source software accessible to all.

Provide integrated tools for system configuration.

Maintain a high level of integration between the base system, the desktop (KDE / GNOME) and the applications; especially improve the integration of third parties (either free or proprietary applications).

Aim for new architectures and formats.

Improve our understanding of computer and electronic device users.

Mageia uses most of the major desktop environments available for Linux. Like its predecessor Mandriva Linux, KDE is the main and most widely used environment. End users can choose between KDE and GNOME on the Live-CDs. The DVD edition is available to install GNOME, KDE, XFCE, Mate, Cinnamon and LXDE among others.
