The Amnesic Incognito Live System or Tails is a Debian based Linux distribution which makes all outgoing connections over the Tor network and any outgoing connections that are not anonymous will be blocked unless we expressly ask you not to.

As its name suggests, it is ‘amnesiac’. This is due to the fact that it does not use our hard drive or our Swap memory, but rather it executes and saves all the elements generated during its use in the RAM memory so that, once the computer is turned off, the data disappears.

In addition, it is a Live Distro, that is, it runs from a USB memory, a DVD or an SD card and does not have persistence, so all the data that we save in the OS and the programs that we install will not be available. next time we install Tails. If we wish otherwise, we can use another USB memory to save the data or create an additional encrypted partition within the main USB

How to use Tails

This is a 1.2 GB download and takes ½ hour to install. Tails can be installed on a USB stick of at least 8 GB. Tails works on most computers less than 10 years old. You can start over on the other operating system after shutting down Tails.

Using Tails on a computer does not alter it, nor does it depend on the installed operating system. So you can use it on your computer, a friend’s, or your local library. After turning off Tails, the computer will start up again with its normal operating system.

Tails is configured with special care not to use the hard drives of the computer, even if there is space swapped on them. The only storage space used by Tails is in RAM, which is automatically erased when the computer is turned off. So you will not leave any trace on the computer of the Tails system itself, or what you used it for.

This allows you to work with sensitive documents on any computer, and protects you from information retrieval after shutdown.

Tails also contains a selection of tools to protect your data using strong cryptography:

Encrypt your USB stick or external hard drive using LUKS, the Linux standard for disk encryption.

Automatically use HTTPS to encrypt all your communications to various major websites using HTTPS Everywhere, a Firefox extension developed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Encrypt and sign your emails and documents using the de facto OpenPGP standard, be it from the Tails mail client, text editor or file browser.

Protect your instant messaging conversations using OTR, a cryptographic tool for encrypting, authenticating, and allowing plausible deniability.

Safely erase your files and clean free disk space using Nautilus Wipe.
